Doris Lessing (nata Tayler). - Scrittrice inglese (n. Kīrmānshāh, Persia, od. Iran, 22 ottobre 1919). Dal 1924 al 1949 visse nella Rhodesia meridionale; nel 1949 si trasferì in Inghilterra. 

Nel primo romanzo The grass is singing (1950) affronta il tema che, accanto a quello della posizione della donna nella società, diverrà dominante nella sua opera: i rapporti tra bianchi e neri in Africa. Nota soprattutto per il ciclo dei cinque romanzi Martha Quest (1952), A proper marriage (1954), A ripple from the storm (1958), Landlocked (1965) e The four-gated city (1969), ha scritto anche racconti (A man and two women, 1963; African stories, 1964; The grandmothers, 2003) e, con minor fortuna, commedie (Each his own wilderness,1953; Mr. Dollinger, 1953; The truth about Billy Newton, 1955; Play with a tiger,1963).
