Originale non solo l'impostazione registica di Massimo Popolizio, ma anche la lettura di Daniele Gatti, che prevede un ritorno alla partitura così come la scrisse Puccini, e non i suoi interpreti

TOSCA: una nuova e originale edizione del capolavoro pucciniano in arrivo sul palcoscenico fiorentino

Una Tosca dall’azione serrata, quasi un noir, destinata sicuramente a lasciare il segno. Paolo Klun, responsabile dell’ufficio stampa e media del teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, apre la conferenza stampa di presentazione del nuovo allestimento del teatro pucciniano sottolineando da subito la profonda novità dello spettacolo, affidato alla regia di Massimo Popolizio e alla direzione del maestro Daniele Gatti. E il sovrintendente Carlo Fuortes non è da meno; “ È uno spettacolo organizzato dalla gestione del commissario Cutaia ma avrei potuto benissimo potuto e voluto farlo io stesso – dichiara – perché è una prova della grande vitalità ma soprattutto della qualità raggiunta da questo teatro a tutti i livelli, da quello artistico a quello amministrativo”.  L’opera andrà in scena venerdì 24 maggio alle ore 20, con repliche il 3, il 6 e l’8 giugno alle ore 20 e il 26 maggio alle ore 15:30.

Tosca è un’opera di repertorio, una delle più amate, andata in scena ben 16 volte sul palcoscenico del massimo teatro toscano. Cosa può esserci dunque di tanto “nuovo”, a parte forse l’allestimento scenico?

Per una volta, la maggiore novità non è tanto nell’aspetto registico – anch’esso comunque originale ma non ... eccessivamente, almeno a quanto pare, ma sta proprio nella parte musicale. A spiegarlo con chiarezza e ricchezza di esempi è infatti il direttore principale dell’orchestra del Maggio Daniele Gatti: “Avvicinarsi a uno spartito è come leggere un romanzo e avvicinarsi a Tosca è esattamente come leggere un libro che ha ispirato migliaia di film. Io cercherò di riportare in luce quegli aspetti dell'opera e delle sue sfumature musicali che sono ancora nella penombra. In un certo senso lo spartito va ‘interrogato’ e è necessario soffermarsi sulla scelta dei tempi: è infatti nel ritmo stesso che troviamo racchiusa la psicologia dei personaggi dell’opera”. Il maestro ha ricordato infatti come la tradizione esecutiva di un’opera spesso si allontana da quelle che erano le vere intenzioni del compositore, dal “segno” scritto sulla partitura, finendo con lo stravolgere le caratteristiche di un personaggio o di una situazione così come il musicista le ha concepite. E se qualche interprete cerca di ritornare al “segno” del compositore, non di rado si grida allo scandalo e al tradimento.  Che cosa è dunque veramente Tosca? Un’opera sentimentale, un’opera d’amore, di passione?  Puccini in verità è stato molto chiaro in questo, anche se noi poi adattiamo la cosa alla nostra sensibilità e la partitura diventa solo una traccia da seguire in misura maggiore o minore per la sensibilità degli interpreti – anche grandi interpretazioni, a volte, e così si pensa che questa sia la giusta dimensione di quest’opera. Salvo poi aprire la partitura e scoprire che l’autore è molto più “moderno” di quanto non si pensi.

Un solo esempio: Tosca è una donna forte o una fragile? Il rapporto con Cavaradossi è un rapporto d’amore oppure di passione? Il duetto del primo atto trai due protagonisti, ad esempio, si inserisce in un meccanismo teatrale serrato e perfetto, quasi “cinematografico”; nel momento in cui Tosca entra in scena per la prima volta, Cavaradossi si trova alle prese con l’enorme problema di dover nascondere Cavaradossi. Tosca irrompe sulla scena non come donna innamorata e languida, come personaggio in preda a una crisi di ansia e gelosia che ne denuncia tutta la fragilità. Il duetto è dunque il tentativo di Cavaradossi di tranquillizzarla perché se ne vada al più presto, per poter procedere con Cavaradossi. Tutto questo aspetto si riflette perfettamente nella musica, che però la prassi esecutiva “tradizionale” non sempre sottolinea, anzi; basti per esempio l’entrata in scena di Tosca, che scandisce per tre volte il nome dell’amato, scanditi come “al rallentatore”; nella partitura originale di Puccini  invece c’è scritto  accellerando  e l’effetto è totalmente diverso.

È solo un piccolo esempio di quella che, da conferenza stampa di presentazione, si è trasformata per qualche minuto in una splendida lezione di musicologia, che ha lasciato davvero intravedere una di quelle esecuzioni straordinarie e avvincenti a cui questo grande direttore ci ha abituati.

Nuova anche la regia di Massimo Popolizio al suo debutto come regista sulle scene del Maggio,  che ha dichiarato: “ “Insieme a Margherita Palli ci siamo posti come obiettivo quello di ricreare una maestosità romana che invece di guardare – soprattutto per quanto riguarda le scene che vedremo – allo splendore barocco dei luoghi originari dove si svolge l’opera prende come riferimento la ‘maestosità moderna’ che si respira nel quartiere del quartiere Eur di Roma. Ma voglio sottolineare che non ho cercato di avventurarmi in situazioni o soluzioni registiche strane, ma solo trovare un altro punto di vista per valorizzare al meglio i temi stessi dell’opera. Per esempio, durante il Te Deum, quello che vedremo sono dei ragazzini di periferia - come l’EUR, appunto - le signore che indossano il vestito migliore per l’occasione, suore con l’abito collegiale, insomma: non vedremo costumi o oggetti scenici di enorme impatto visivo anche poiché questo lavoro di ‘pulizia’ verso il quale ci siamo orientati rende quasi più sacro quanto vediamo scorrere sul palcoscenico. Come riferimento abbiamo preso un grande film di Bernardo Bertolucci, Il conformista, nel quale si respira in modo deciso l’aria della Roma, un’aria che noi cerchiamo di ‘portare in scena’ qui al Maggio con questo nuovo allestimento di Tosca. Nella nostra visione la Roma nella quale si muovono i protagonisti è certo elegante, ma anche estremamente violenta: uno dei pilastri di quest’opera infatti è Scarpia, che non solo è un uomo violento, ma anche profondamente sadico. Anche scenicamente questo è sottolineato dagli oggetti collezionati da quest’uomo, oggetti macabri e orrorifici: nel secondo atto vedremo ad esempio una libreria, dove sono conservati, sotto formaldeide, animali e bestie impagliate. Dunque ciò che abbiamo cercato di pensare e mettere in scena è una trasposizione temporale in una Roma bellissima e violenta che non muta però la sostanza del racconto e, soprattutto, non cambia quelli che sono i rapporti fra i protagonisti in scena.”

Uno spettacolo dunque che promette emozioni e sorprese, anche per il notevole cast vocale: Sul palcoscenico, al suo esordio sulle scene del Maggio, il soprano Vanessa Goikoetxea interpreta la protagonista della vicenda, la cantante Floria Tosca. Piero Pretti, fra i più apprezzati tenori della scena internazionale, che torna al Maggio dopo il grande successo ottenuto con il Rigoletto dell’autunno 2021; veste per la prima volta in carriera il ruolo dell’amante di Tosca, il pittore Mario Cavaradossi (interpretato nella recita dell’8 giugno da Vincenzo Costanzo). Alexey Markov, anche lui al suo debutto sul palcoscenico del Teatro, è invece il sadico barone Scarpia, spietato antagonista della storia pucciniana. Gabriele Sagona interpreta Cesare Angelotti; Matteo Torcaso veste i panni del Sagrestano; Oronzo D’Urso e Dario Giorgelé sono invece rispettivamente Spoletta e Sciarrone, gli sgherri di Scarpia. Chiude la compagnia di canto nel ruolo di Un carceriere Cesare Filiberto Tenuta.

Le scene sono di Margherita Palli, firma tra le più prestigiose degli ultimi decenni e che al Teatro alla Scala nel 1997 curò la scenografia della storica Tosca scaligera con la regia di Luca Ronconi; i costumi sono di Silvia Aymonino, che di recente ha curato i costumi per l’Ernani dell’ottobre 2022 mentre le luci sono di Pasquale Mari. Il maestro del Coro del Maggio è Lorenzo Fratini. La maestra del Coro di Voci Bianche dell’Accademia del Maggio è Sara Matteucci.
