Non chiamiamola Intelligenza Artificiale

Chiamiamola elaborazione artificiale e lasciamo stare l'intelligenza che è una faccenda seria

l tormentone delle ultime settimane riguarda la cosiddetta intelligenza artificiale. Va bene parliamone, ma cominciamo a dire che non si tratta affatto di “intelligenza”, men che meno la si può definire artificiale.

Intanto l’intelligenza. Il termine proviene dal latino intelligere cioè intendere e si riferisce al «Complesso di facoltà psichiche e mentali che consentono all’uomo di pensare, comprendere o spiegare i fatti o le azioni, elaborare modelli astratti della realtà, intendere e farsi intendere dagli altri, giudicare…» come recita la voce corrispondente del dizionario della Treccani.

C’è dunque da chiedersi come tale termine possa associarsi all’aggettivo artificiale che significa il contrario di naturale. Infatti come può l’ “intelligenza” e la sua stessa essenza di insieme di “facoltà psichiche e mentali che consentono all’uomo di pensare” dunque per definizione “naturale” (ovvero facente parte della natura dell’uomo) essere associata a ciò che non è naturale ma appunto artificiale?

Ammettiamo per ora che il sintagma passato in giudicato dall’uso comune sia accettabile e veniamo ai risultati di questa cosiddetta IA. L’ultimo risultato strabiliante e di gran moda della IA è ChatGPT, ovvero un software in grado di creare (fra le altre cose) un testo in italiano corretto su qualsiasi argomento a fronte di una serie di indicazioni fornitegli dall’utente. Più le indicazioni sono precise e dettagliate maggiore sarà la complessità del testo che il software elaborerà.

Per esempio si fornisce ChatGPT l’indicazione di creare un testo sui romanzi umoristici di Guareschi (fornendogli i titoli) e chiedendo di elaborare il concetto di umorismo che caratterizza detti romanzi. Il risultato è una paginetta dove sono contenute una serie di banalità sull’umorismo tipo: «Ciò che rende unici l'umorismo e la satira di Guareschi è il suo approccio garbato e affettuoso. Pur prendendo di mira i difetti e i vizi della società italiana del suo tempo, l'autore lo fa con una leggerezza che non scade mai nell'aggressività o nella cattiveria».

Il testo in sé è abbastanza corretto peccato che non riguardi i romanzi che erano stati indicati, ovvero Il marito in collegio e Il destino si chiama Clotilde nei quali i “difetti e i vizi della società del suo tempo” non sono esattamente l’oggetto dei romanzi (due storie di pura fantasia ambientati in non-luoghi e in un non-tempo come le fiabe).

Aggiungiamo che il software sbaglia clamorosamente i nomi dei protagonisti dei due romanzi (uno dei quali addirittura viene chiamato con il nome di uno dei personaggi dello Scialo di Pratolini!).

Dunque certo il testo generato da ChatGPT è formalmente corretto, ma non risponde alla specificità di quanto era stato richiesto.

Se poi chiediamo di formulare un testo su un tema generico tipo la fine dell’anno scolastico, inserendo come indicazioni, cooperazione positiva dei docenti, risultati eccellenti degli studenti, ambiente scolastico sereno e confortevole, la cosiddetta IA produrrà un temino banale e scontato grondante retorica e buoni sentimenti.

E allora di nuovo mi chiedo perché definirla “Intelligenza”, perché associarla alla capacità umana e solo umana di trasfondere in un testo non solo le proprie conoscenze, ma soprattutto l’interpretazione delle stesse e la loro formulazione passate al vaglio della “Cultura”, della formazione,  che, essendo diverse per ciascuno di noi, determina, a parità di dati, la creazione di un testo che varia, soprattutto nella qualità, da individuo a individuo?

Dunque non chiamiamola IA chiamiamola in un altro modo (per esempio elaborazione artificiale) ma lasciamo in pace l’intelligenza che è una faccenda piuttosto complicata e difficilmente replicabile.

Se così non fosse chiunque di noi potrebbe diventare più intelligente, certo sarebbe bello ma fino ad ora non si conosco casi di incremento dell’intelligenza. Viceversa ciascuno di noi conosce esempi di annullamento della stessa messa a dormire o lasciata in quiescenza.

Si dirà che la definizione di IA è un problema secondario, i problemi sono altri ecc. ecc. Non è del tutto vero.

È certamente vero che la cosiddetta IA pone dei problemi che mettono un’ipoteca pesantissima sul futuro dei nostri giovani e non solo. Ma il problema della definizione è altrettanto importante anzi forse è il primo problema, se infatti ammettiamo di chiamare “intelligenza” un aggregatore raffinato di dati (peraltro immessi dall’uomo) togliamo all’uomo stesso la sua unicità. Prepariamo così un possibile e accettabile, perché sempre di intelligenza si parlerebbe, esercito di imbecilli privi di personalità, ma capaci, utilizzando un software, di spacciare conoscenze che non hanno, stile che non è il loro, ancorché banale.  Un esercito di cloni da far invidia al più distopico dei film o dei libri di fantascienza. Una coorte di individui trasformati in massa unipensante, anzi replicante uno pseudopensiero formulato artificialmente.

E non si accorgeranno di questa trasformazione rassicurati dal fatto di maneggiare qualcosa che si chiama comunque intelligenza.
