Voilà la Carmencita! Il capolavoro di Bizet vola sul palcoscenico del Maggio.

Una Carmen da standing ovation, soprattutto per l’orchestra, il coro e il direttore “fiorentino” per eccellenza: Zubin Mehta. Il vecchio leone questa volta non ha solo stupito, ma trascinato un pubblico in un affettuoso e incontenibile entusiasmo.

Tempi non felici né facili per il Maggio, anche se il commissario Onofrio Cutaia ha esordito in modo sereno e rassicurante. Nella sua prima conferenza stampa, Cutaia ha ricordato l’alta qualità di tutto il personale del teatro e in particolare l’eccellenza dell’orchestra e del coro; ed è come se, all’unisono con il loro direttore (anzi i loro direttori, Mehta per l’orchestra e Lorenzo Fratini per il coro) queste masse davvero straordinarie abbiano ricordato a Firenze e al mondo di cosa sono capaci, e quale immenso patrimonio artistico e culturale costituiscano.

Certo Carmen è un’opera dal fascino e dalla bellezza pressochè uniche, che unisce una grandissima popolarità a una raffinatezza e sapienza strumentale e vocale davvero uniche, al punto da scaldare il cuore persino a Nietzsche, facendogli dimenticare le brume nibelungiche. Lo spettacolo in scena in questi giorni al Maggio si avvalgono dell’allestimento scenico (del 2009) ripreso dall’Opernhaus di Zurigo, con la regia di Matthias Hartmann con l’assistenza di Claudia Blersch: il regista, di ritorno al Maggio dopo aver curato, nel dicembre 2021 la regia del semi-scenico Fidelio, opera inaugurale della Sala Mehta, ha immaginato insieme al suo team creativo una scenografia caratterizzata da una forte impronta minimalista, con pochi oggetti su una scena dominata in gran parte da una pedana inclinata al centro; un modo per mettere ancor più in evidenza se possibile quelli che sono gli aspetti del carattere dei protagonisti della vicenda, soprattutto quelli più cupi e brutali.  Il regista elimina così qualsiasi riferimento “spagnolesco” ma non si comprende bene con cosa venga sostituito; se siamo in una dimensione astorica e temporale perché vestire i gendarmi con le uniformi della polizia italiana? Ha un qualche significato il simpatico cucciolone (ovviamente di pezza) acciambellato per tutto il primo atto? Anche i movimenti scenici non sembrano sempre curatissimi e la sensazione è che a volte gli interpreti si sentano un po’ “spaesati”.

Quello che comunque non dice la scenografia lo evoca benissimo l’orchestra. C’è chi ha riscontrato “tempi lunghi” nella direzione di Mehta, ma o questo era un problema solo della prima rappresentazione oppure è diventato un po’ una sorta di cliché. I tempi, almeno a chi scrive, sono sembrati sempre giusti e perfettamente calibrati alla situazione scenica: Mehta riesce a rendere con vivacità ed eleganza, senza sbavature, sia il brillante preludio del primo atto che pagine come la canzone del Toreador, o la prima parte dell’ultimo atto, a partire dall’introduzione sinfonica; ma sa anche lavorare di cesello ed evocare atmosfere sospese e momenti di intensa  liricità, come l’ entrac’te del terzo atto, con  il magnifico assolo del flauto (insieme all’arpa e al clarinetto) , o l’accompagnamento sinuoso e seducente della Habanera. Una lettura, quella di Mehta, che ha evidenziato come il “colore spagnolo” in Bizet non sia mai meramente folcloristico, ma serva a evocare personaggi, sentimenti, situazioni: insomma, la musica come “figuratrice dell’invisibile”. Orchestra e coro in perfetta sintonia e al massimo della forma.

Sostanzialmente positivo il giudizio anche sulla parte vocale, pur con qualche “nota a margine”.  Il mezzosoprano Clémentine Margaine è sicuramente una veterana nella parte della protagonista Carmen, la conturbante zingara che fa dell’amore una sorta di manifestazione del suo desiderio assoluto di libertà; basti pensare che ha interpretato il ruolo sia al Metropolitan di New York che all’arena di Verona. E senza dubbio si è fatta apprezzare anche qui per il suo bel timbro scuro, propriamente da mezzosoprano: una voce calda e sensuale, capace di colori e sfumature sottili.  L’inizio tuttavia non era stato molto incoraggiante: la splendida Habanera del primo atto brilla molto di più per l’esecuzione strumentale che per quella vocale, che rimane abbastanza “fredda” e poco convincente. Ma subito dopo la cantante si riprende e già il Près des remparts de Séville  ( la “seguidilla” e il successivo duetto) è tutt’altra cosa, sia sul piano scenico che vocale.

Il tenore Francesco Meli è senza dubbio un cantante di tutto rispetto, ma nei panni di Don Josè non sembra proprio del tutto a suo agio; soprattutto nel primo atto, in cui non si capisce bene come passi da una indifferenza sin troppo ostentata nei confronti della seducente Bohémienne a farsi addirittura arrestare per lei. Anche nel drammatico e terribile finale l’interprete non sembra del tutto calato nel ruolo. Molto meglio il lato vocale, soprattutto nella morbida e sensuale romanza del fiore; qualche appunto, forse, sulla dizione ma nel complesso la parte è affrontata con sicurezza ed efficacia.

La Michaela del soprano Valentina Naforniţă è un personaggio ingenuo e “per bene” che ben si contrappone alla irruente protagonista; mentre l’Escamillo del baritono Mattia Olivieri è molto ben interpretato sul piano scenico: sul piano vocale, qualche difficoltà nel registro grave ma nel complesso il volume della voce è discreto e la dizione francese molto … charmant! Ben calibrati e decisamente piacevoli le parti minori, in buona parte talenti ed ex talenti dell’Accademia del Maggio Fiorentino: Volodymyr Morozov nel ruolo del tenente Zuniga, brillanti Aitana Sanz Pérez e Xeni Tziouvaras, le due amiche di Carmen, Frasquita e Mercédès; William Hernandez e Oronzo D’Urso nel ruolo spavaldo dei due contrabbandieri Dancaïre e Le Remendado. Un plauso anche per il coro della voci bianche diretto da Sara Matteucci.

Prossime repliche: 11 e il 14 aprile alle ore 20 e il 16 aprile alle ore 15:30.  Decisamente da non perdere.
